At a morning show of the 59th National Film Festival there are only 16 people in a theatre that can seat 400. In a Nehruvian socialist utopia, the unemployed and vacationing student body of the city would be enriching its mind by thronging to a free film festival that provided the opportunity to rest in padded reclining seats in air-conditioned luxury during the blistering, power cut-laden heat of June. Rajeev Kumar Jain, the director of the parent Directorate of Film Festivals, claims that attendance this year has indeed been better than it was last year, when the films were screened only on weekends over the course of a month. But outreach is still a problem.
