Online shopping firm Amazon is going to set up three new fulfilment centres in India by December-end. Currently, it has 24 centres across 10 states having a total area of 6 million cubic feet. The new facilities will add 1.5 million cubic feet space to the company's existing warehouse infrastructure in the country, according to Amazon India director(category management) Noor Patel.
Without disclosing the location of these new centres, Noor Patel on Friday said the new fulfilment centres will be coming up in cities witnessing huge demand in online sales. At present, the company has centres located at Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Jaipur, Gurgoan, Ludhiana, Nagpur, Delhi, Coimbatore, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata. Some of these cities have more than one centre.
He was here to announce the company's Great Indian Festival from October 1-5.
Patel said that consumer electronics segment has seen 140 per cent growth in India. The categories of mobile phones and speakers registered 170 per cent and 240 per cent growth respectively in the last one year. Other than smart phones, the demand is also growing for wearable devices, laptops and cameras.
According to him, the demand for 4G devices has doubled to over 80 per cent of all the smart phones sold in the past six months. This was due to the launch of Reliance Jio and festive demand among other reasons.
"The company has tied up with 57 smart phone brands and 11 brands of mobile accessories. Few brands such as Microsoft, Xiaomi and Lenovo are launching their new products exclusively on our platform," he added.
Amazon India has more than 1.2 lakh sellers offering 80 million products across various categories. Telangana has over 5,000 sellers at present, while there were 1,200 sellers in the previous year. Hyderabad is the fourth largest market for the company after Bangalore, New Delhi and Mumbai. The city has recorded highest growth in terms of sales and number of customers.
