Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has directed the agriculture department to assess the quantum of loss to crops by untimely rain to provide compensation to the farmers.
According to reports, rabi crops, mainly wheat, has been damaged due to intermittent rain and thunder storms across the state over the last couple of weeks. The crop has been flattened at many places, said sources.
The projection of higher yield this year due to prolonged winter has been dashed as the farmers are expecting a 20-30 per cent loss due to excess rains.
A higher yield could have made for the mild revision of Rs 50 a quintal in the minimum support price of the wheat announced this year.
The harvesting will commence in March-end or early April. An assessment by the agriculture department will help provide an accurate picture of the economic loss.
