Kerala has banned entry of poultry from other states following detection of avian influenza (bird flu) in a government farm at Hessarghatta, outside Bangalore.
Following an intimation in this regard from the Karnataka, the state Animal Husbandry Department banned movement of poultry from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu since last evening, sources said on Tuesday.
Avian influenza was detected in turkey and chicken in a farm of the Central Poultry Development Organization, where the H5N1 virus claimed over 3,600 turkeys last fortnight. The affliction was confirmed by tests of samples conducted at the high Security Animal Health Laboratory in Bhopal, the sources said.
In view of this, Kerala Animal Husbandary Department had instructed the officials at all its 18 border check posts not to allow into Kerala vehicles carrying poultry from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, the DC of Bangalore urban district has extended ban on marketing and movement of poultry and poultry products to and fro to the surveillance zone up to November 15, 2012. The Centre on October 29, decided to cull all the birds within the radius of 1 km from the epicentre.
Central Poultry Development Organization, Hesarghatta. About 25 RRTs are involved in the culling and disposal of 19,235 chicken, 13,673 ducks, 369 emu birds, and sanitisation of 52 poultry sheds in the CPDO Farm, Hessarghatta.
As on Tuesday, 19,154 chickens have been culled and disposed as per the guidelines in the action plan (revised) 2012. Six teams are involved in Surveillance work in 10 km of surveillance zone, and collected 175 samples, submitted to laboratory for investigation. No unusual death of birds are noticed in the surveillance zone or in any part of the state, Aravind Jannu, principal secretary, department of animal husbandry and veterinary sciences said.
