House panel recommends MSP Metallics closure

The House Committee on environment of state assembly has recommended shutting down of MSP Metallics factory at Jharsuguda on pollution grounds.

The three member House Committee on environment recently visited the sponge iron unit of MSP Metallic and was dissatisfied with the pollution control measures taken by it. The committee has decided to recommend the government about shutting down the unit, MS Majhi, regional officer of Odisha State Pollution Control Board for Jharsuguda district told Business Standard.

The House Committee members who visited the district included Jeevan Pradeep Dash, Neveen Nanda and Debasis Nayak.

The company needs to take more environment friendly measures and on safety of the employees. There is not even a urinal for the employees, said Jeevan Pradeep Das, while giving his observation on the MSP Metallic.

MSP Metallic is currently producing sponge iron, pig iron and billets at its Jharsuguda unit. It has proposed to build one million tonne per annum integrated steel plant and a 24 Mw captive power unit on 500 acres of land at the same site with an initial investment of Rs 495 crore.

Last year, at least six labourers at the MSP facility were killed due to fire accident at its coal injection unit.

The House Committee also visited production facility of Vedanta Aluminium unit and expressed satisfaction over its commitment towards social responsibility, said committee chairman Debasis Nayak.
