US Treasury Secretary postpones India visit

Pranab Mukherjee is expected to resign as Finance Minister to file his nomination for presidential election on the same date

US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner today decided to postpone his India trip considering that his Indian counterpart, Pranab Mukherjee, is expected to resign as Finance Minister to file his nomination for presidential election.

According to a Treasury statement, in light of Mukherjee's candidacy for President of India and his expected resignation as Finance Minister, Geithner's trip to India for the next meeting of the US-India Economic and Financial Partnership, originally scheduled for June 27-28, has been postponed.

"Mukherjee has been an effective ally in the G-20 and a strong partner in deepening the economic relationship between the United States and India," the Department of Treasury said in a statement.    

The meeting is expected to be rescheduled in the months ahead, the Treasury said.
