Four paramilitary troopers injured in Kashmir attack

IANS  |  Srinagar

Four paramilitary troopers were injured when suspected militants attacked them on the outskirts of city on Friday evening, officials said.

Police said militants fired at a party of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) that was withdrawing after the day's law and order duties in Zakura on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. The militants were believed to have fled the spot.

The attack took place outside the highly sensitive Zakura industrial area that houses many offices and factories of small and medium businesses in Kashmir. The business hub is located 12 km north of the city centre of Lal Chowk. The SSB is camped in the industrial estate in Zakura.

Additional security forces have been rushed to the spot. "Firing has stopped in the area and it has been cordoned off," a police officer said.

It was the second attack on security forces in the Kashmir Valley in less than a week.

Militancy-related violence and terror attacks on security forces have surged in after the July 8 killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.

Wani's death has sparked an unprecedented wave of protests in the Kashmir Valley, leaving over 90 people dead and thousands injured in clashes between protesters and security forces.

Earlier this week, two militants were killed after a three-day-long gun fight with security forces in Pampore area on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
