Prime Minister Modi on Sunday left for a three-day visit to the during the course of which he will attend this year's India-Summit and the East Summit.

This is the first prime ministerial visit from to the in 36 years since the visit of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1981.

Modi will attend the 15th India-Summit and the 12th East Summit in Manila on Tuesday.

The Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Ahead of the two summits, Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with Filipino President Roberto Duterte on Monday.

Meetings with world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who are attending the East Summit, are likely on the sidelines.
