Sun TV restrained from using Sony Music recordings

Sun TV, which was found using a number of Music Entertainment songs without prior approval, has been barred from using Music copyrighted work with immediate effect.

The Madras High Court on Friday passed the ban order and the judgement was passed by Justice K Kalyanasundaram, read a statement from the global music house.

The order makes getting approval from music rights owners mandatory before using (synchronisation) songs with new visuals.

Shridhar Subramaniam, President Music Entertainment- India and Middle East, said: "Approvals from music rights owners are mandatory before using (synchronisation) songs with new visuals. The music could be existing songs, versions or underlying works.

"TV broadcasters, advertisers, film producers and internet companies who use existing music will now need to seek prior permission from copyright owners before communicating to the public including broadcasters."
