Two more arrested for Jadavpur University alumna's death

IANS  |  Kolkata

Two more persons have been arrested for the death of Jadavpur University alumna Mita Mondal, a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) official said here on Tuesday.

Mita's brother-in-law Rahul Mondal was arrested on Monday night and her mother-in-law Kalpana Mondal on Tuesday morning from a relative's house in Uluberia of West Bengal's Howrah district, the official said.

Earlier Mita's husband Rana Mondal and father-in-law Dijendra Mondal were arrested.

Mita, wife of Rana Mondal of Kushberia near Kolkata, allegedly committed suicide on Monday after a spat with her husband.

While the in-laws maintained that Mita committed suicide, her family and friends claimed the extensive injuries on her body showed she was a victim of domestic violence.

Amid rallies against domestic violence and growing demands for punishing the offenders, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered the CID investigation after meeting Mita's family at the state Secretariat Nabanna on Monday.

"We will seek police remand of Rana, Rahul and Dijendra to further investigate the case," the official said.
