Right up to the Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress refused to accept investigations by the state CID into critical issues, including incidents of political violence. The party and its chief Mamata Banerjee were more keen on CBI intervention wherever possible. Now that it is in power, the Trinamool leadership has acquired faith in the state’s CID. Trinamool chief and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused a demand for CBI investigation into death of three Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) supporters that occurred last February in Darjeeling. After meeting GJM leader Bimal Gurung, Banerjee said the CID was being re-organised and will lead the investigation instead.
