Letters: East is east

The dismay expressed by Malavika Sangghvi in the article “What’s in a name?” (June 18) is justified. The article made me recall an incident in the sixties when Tamil film critics hailed Sivaji Ganesan – a popular Tamil film star – as the Marlon Brando of India when Ganesan’s career was at its peak. A well-known editor of a Tamil weekly – Tamilvanan – was, however, quick to retort that it would be more appropriate if Americans call Marlon Brando their Sivaji! It is time we stop assessing the achievements of our people from the prism of western standards.
