Senior Superintendent of Police, Akhilesh Kumar Jha, said the girl, a resident of Bhalubasa locality here, was trying to jump from a bridge over Swarnarekha river here but some passers-by stopped her when she lost consciousness.

She was now admitted to M G M hospital and her condition was now stable.

Her family members verbally complained to the police that the neighbour used to harass the girl when she went for private tuition in the evening.

Jha said a police team was sent to investigate the matter after "we were informed that the victim was being harassed by her neighbour for sometime."

Her family alleged she had to drop out of her school for constant teasing by the accused and was preparing to appear for the school final examination as a private student.

The accused had allegedly also kidnapped the girl a year ago but brought her back after the girl's parent threatened to lodge a police complaint.

The issue had been sorted out at the community level but he had started troubling the girl again since the last few days, the sources added.

The police said appropriate action would be taken against the accused after investigation but no formal complaint was lodged in this regard as yet.
