Seven college students en route to Neduvasal by an express train to participate in a stir against the hydrocarbon project in that town were arrested at Kulithalai railway station today. The students were proceeding by the Palakkad Express from Coimbatore to that town for a protest when they were arrested at the railway station. They were produced before judicial magisrate Revathy, who remanded them to 15 days judicial custody. On Mar 9, the villagers of Neduvasal had temporarily withdrawn their 22 day stir against the project.
Protest leaders had said they were doing so, considering the Centre's recent "assurance" to Tamil Nadu that it would not implement any project inimical to state's interests. Another reason for withdrawing the stir was the ongoing 10th and 12th standard board examinations, they had said. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami had also urged the protesters to withdraw the stir, saying the state would not implement any project which was against the interests of the people.
