"Captain Amrinder Singh will continue as PCC president till local body elections," party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi told reporters here today.

A major section of Punjab Congress, which suffered a defeat at the hands of Akali-BJP combine in the recent assembly elections, has raised a banner of revolt against Amarinder, who failed to steer the party to victory in the state. A number of senior party leaders from the state are already lobbying hard in for his replacement.

Meanwhile, the Congress high-command has already made Amarinder to head the screening committee for municipal polls, which will decide on candidates for the forthcoming civic body polls.

While Amarinder is the chairman of the committee, leader of opposition in the state assembly Sunil Jakhar and senior leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal are its members.

The Congress has already started the process for selection of candidates for elections to four municipal corporations of Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Patiala, with aspirants asked to submit their applications to the respective district presidents or the committee itself on May 8 at Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Amritsar and on May 9 at Patiala.

The forthcoming civic polls in Punjab will be first test for the SAD-BJP combine after it returned to power in the January 30 state assembly polls by creating history of any government in the state repeating itself.

The polls will also be a test for the Congress, which is likely to see drastic changes in the wake of its defeat in the assembly polls.
