Stressing on the need to create win-win adaptation programmes to deal with climate change, Environment Ministry Secretary T Chatterjee today said the country should encourage off-grid power generation systems especially by using biodiesel from slaughterhouse waste and palm oil waste.
"The concept of 'Green Credits' for developing existing degraded lands and generating green certificates for forest development should be considered," he suggested.
He was inaugurating the 'India Carbon Market Conclave 2012' organised by FICCI and Environment Ministry in partnership with the World Bank and the German Environment Ministry. He also released a FICCI Knowledge Paper 'Climathon: From Durban to Doha' on the occasion.
The knowledge paper summarises developments both in the global arena and within India in the realm of climate change.
Chatterjee suggested that Research and Development especially in terms of adaptation of technologies coming from developed countries should be taken up seriously.
He mentioned that the best adaptation is robust biodiversity and the upcoming conference of parties on biodiversity in Hyderabad focuses on marine biodiversity, access and benefit sharing which will have significant involvement of the corporate sector.
Franzjosef Schafhausen, Deputy Director General, Environment and Energy, German Environment Ministry underlined the need to create a carbon neutral world.
"The reasons to deal with climate change are not just related to climate change impacts, but also related to economic growth, jobs, energy security, technology and innovation," he said.
Schafhausen said that the carbon market in Germany holds an important place and the nation has been using emissions trading since 2005.
"Almost 50 per cent of the emissions in Germany are covered by emission trading," he said and pointed out the importance of contact and co-operation with other countries with respect to carbon markets and new market mechanisms, Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMAs) and sectoral approaches.
