Curfew in Meghalaya-Assam border following communal tension

The curfew, clamped last evening and to be in force till the situation normalises, was imposed following reports that some miscreants at Rajabala in Meghalaya and Dhubri in Assam were trying to foment communal tension, he said.

A Garo Hills-bound truck carrying vegetables was torched in Mankachar in Dhubri district of Assam during a bandh after which the miscreants started spreading rumours about skirmish between two communities, the DGP said.

The curfew was relaxed for two hours this evening, Ramachandran said adding "we want to ensure that the situation does not aggravate."

Altogether, 12 persons were taken into custody for violating the curfew.
