Gang leader arrested for mowing down Delhi police constable

27-year-old Shakir, the leader of Mewati gang, was arrested by Special Unit of Police crime branch from Matka Peer Dargah near Pragati Maidan at about 5.40 AM when he came to meet his accomplice, a senior police official said.

Shakir was carrying a cash reward of Rs one lakh on his head.

During interrogation, Shakir, a resident of Dhauj village of Faridabad, said that his gang was involved in theft of cattle and other crime in Delhi and NCR region.

He confessed that on the intervening night of May 17 and 18, he and his accomplices crushed to death constable Naresh when he along with one other constable tried to stop their vehicle in which the gang was carrying the stolen cattle, said DCP Crime and Railways S B S Tyagi.

Shakir said that he is the brother of Dhaula Kuan rape case accused Shahid.
