Senior BJP leader P K Dhumal today alleged that the state police had become a "puppet" in the hands of current dispensation and was being used to target leaders of opposition parties.
There has been a spurt in heinous crimes and the police's credibility has completely eroded, he claimed in a statement here.
"People have lost faith in the police, and the handing over of the Kotkhai rape and murder case to the CBI by the high court has exposed the functioning of the police," the former chief minister said.
The number of FIRs registered in 2012 was 11,800, but it swelled to 18,000 in 2016 while the number of heinous crimes has increased three times, Dhumal claimed.
"The Himachal Pradesh police was among the best in the country, but now its image has taken serious blow. There is demand of handing all sensitive cases to the CBI," he said.
Dhumal demanded that the chief minister should resign on moral grounds.
"The Congress government has misused the police for settling scores with political opponents in the past five years. The police has become a puppet in the hands of the ruling party," he said.
