Roy, who is Union Minister of State for Urban Development told reporters after a meeting of the Airport Advisory Committee that it would be up to the Centre and the state government to decide when the terminal would be formally thrown open after completion.

The minister said the modernisation of the NSCB international airport, taken up by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and designed to handle two crore passengers, was pegged at Rs 2,400 crore.

The cost was far less than the recent modernisation by private agencies of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport in Mumbai and the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, he said.
