Chinese Police last year seized 7.08 tonnes of heroin and 14.32 tonnes of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as "ice," a year-on-year increase of 32.1 per cent and 44.9 per cent, respectively, according to the National Narcotics Control Commission (NNCC).

Police also confiscated 1,834.78 tonnes of chemicals used to manufacture narcotics last year, state-run Xinhua reported.

The report said 171,000 people underwent quarantined rehabilitation in 2011, while 97,000 people were required to go to community rehabilitation centres.

The NNCC's annual drug control report has been issued since 1998.
