Press Trust of India  |  New Delhi

A 45-year-old businessman was shot dead, while his wife and son were injured after unidentified men attacked them in Mansarovar Park area of Shahdara, police said today.

Singhal and his 18-year-old son Saurabh had just returned to their home from their shop in Ashok Nagar when they were attacked, police added.

Mukesh, a cold drinks trader, was parking his scooter when three men on a motorcycle tried to snatch his bag last night, said a senior police officer.

The bag contained Rs 30,000-40,000, the officer said.

A scuffle ensued and tried to resist their attempt. His wife Sunita also came out hearing the commotion outside.

During scuffle, the motorcycle riders fired and bullets hit and his wife Sunita, respectively. A bullet also hit their son.

Locals alerted police and the injured were rushed to the hospital.

Mukesh was declared brought dead at the hospital, the police officer said, adding his wife's condition is critical and she is under observation, while his son is out of danger.

"The CCTV footage of the area is being analysed. Prima face it appears that the attackers had come with an intention to rob the businessman but we are also probing other angles," said the officer.

Police are trying to ascertain whether Mukesh had any enmity with anyone. They are also probing whether the accused were following him from his shop.
