"It is shameful that because of Chouhan's tough stand on the issue of land acquisition for a power plant, the situation in Dongaria and Bujbuja is fast turning out like Singur," Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Ajay Singh said in a statement.

The Chief Minister himself had said many times that he would not permit industries to come up on the farmers' land, he pointed out.

"The situation is becoming explosive as the Katni district administration is pressurising farmers to give up their land," Ajay alleged and warned that he (Chouhan) would be held responsible if anything untoward takes place in the area.

A similar controversy had earlier erupted at Singur in West Bengal where the then Left Front government had sought to acquire farmers' land for a car project by the Tatas which met with strong protests and ultimately the project was abandoned.

The MP government is acquiring land in Katni district for a thermal power plant being set up by Welspun Energy Madhya Pradesh Ltd.
