Tagore's Nobel medal theft: Baul singer arrested

A 'baul' singer has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the theft of Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel Prize medal in 2004, a CID officer said here today.

Pradip Bauri was picked up by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) from his Ruppur village residence in Birbhum district earlier this month, the official said on condition of anonymity.

The SIT which arrested Bauri was formed thereafter. It consists of Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, ADG of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Rajesh Kumar and IG of CID (II) Javed Shamim.

The Nobel medal and the citation, won by Tagore in 1913, were stolen from Visva Bharati University's museum.

The had taken over the case soon after, but failed to recover it and closed the case in 2007.

However, under political pressure, the case was reopened in 2008 and closed again in 2009.
