"Akhil's decision to form a political party is a welcome step. India is a democratic country and every citizen has the right to participate in politics and as a citizen of India Akhil has a right to form a political party," Gogoi said here.

Akhil Gogoi, who is also the general secretary of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, had yesterday announced that he would form a political party around 2015 or 2016.

However, he had said that his party would not contest the next Assembly polls in 2016 and would only highlight issues like ill effects of big dams and for land rights to indigenous people.

Akhil Gogoi had yesterday announced a series of state-wide agitations to protest against alleged atrocities on anti-dam activists by police and CRPF at Lakhimpur district and against spiralling inflation.
