The train knocked down the villagers who were walking on a railway bridge in Funing county in Qinhuangdao city, the city's publicity department said.

The villagers climbed over the railway guardrail and walked along a section of the Datong-Qinhuangdao railway after a nearby road was damaged by torrential rains, state-run Xinhua agency quoted local officials as saying.

The four injured have been been sent to a local hospital for medical treatment.

A further investigation into the cause of the accident is under way.
