Twelve cops injured in protest over trader's death

One Yameen, who ran a grocery shop, died at the hospital this morning of injuries received in an assault on Aug 5, triggering protest by locals.

Alleging police inaction in the case the local residents block the road and gheraoed Madiaon police station, sources said.

An irate mob vandalised the police station and torched two vehicles including a police jeep and a motorcycle they said.

When police tried to control the situation the mob indulged in brickbatting and damaged roadways buses, the sources said.

In a bid to control the situation police resorted to lathicharge, they said.

Around 12 policemen including circle officer Aliganj Anees Ahmed Ansari and Spl officer Madiaon were injured in the incident they said.

A senior police officer said the mob was misled by some persons as the case was lodged on the same day and an accused Surendra Singh had been arrested.

He said efforts were being made to arrest two other accused Rampal and Satnam. (PTI) AVA PG UJB ALM
