The victims lodged a written complaint with the district collector yesterday and alleged that the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Basant Kumar Rout made them to do sit-ups during a review meeting of revenue circles at the tehsil office on Tuesday.
The meeting was scheduled to be held at 9.30 am. The revenue inspectors of Righagada and Gupti revenue circles turned up at the meeting 15 minutes late. The senior officer rebuked them and later forced them to do sit ups in front of other colleagues.
Kendrapara Collector Reghu G said "after enquiry, the incident was found to be true. Such behaviour on the part of the ADM was undesirable. He has tendered unconditional apology to a delegation of revenue inspectors."
The revenue inspectors were made to do sit-ups at the direction of the ADM. They were punished because they reported for the meeting about 15 minutes late, said Rajnagar Tehsildar Nihar Ranjan Mallick.
The ADM Basant Kumar Rout could not be contacted as his cell phone remained switched off.
Its a very unfortunate incident. Such show of high-handedness on the part of a senior officer was uncalled for. The revenue inspectors were responsible government employees doing multifarious duties in remote areas. Coming late for the meeting was not a crime which deserved such physical punishment. They were not kids who were to be taught the lessons of punctuality by ordering them to do sit-ups, said an officer bearer of the All Odisha Revenue Inspectors Association Dukhishyam Panda.
