U'khand Speaker asks officials to give proper respect to MLAs

Kunjwal issued directives to this effect when Leader of Opposition Ajay Bhatt raised the issue of BJP member Bhimlal Arya not being addressed as "Honourable Member" in an Assembly document related to the proceedings of the House.

Bhatt said Arya enjoys certain privileges as a member of the House and not using the prefix before his name was an insult to him.

Accusing the officials of having committed such mistakes in the past as well, he demanded that the Chair issue a strict ruling in this regard.

Alleging that officials in Uttarakhand do not even follow the rules of ordinary etiquette, the Leader of Opposition said they should welcome the MLAs by rising from their seats if they visit their chambers and follow them to the exit when they are leaving.

At public functions officials sit on the dais and make the legislators occupy the row of seats in the foreground, the BJP leader alleged, saying it was not appropriate to give such treatment to people's representatives.

After hearing the Leader of Opposition, Kunjwal termed it a "serious matter" and directed the officials to strictly follow the protocol and pay proper respect to legislators.

"I direct the officials to ensure strict adherence to protocol and give proper respect to MLAs so that they never feel insulted," he said.
