Volkswagen names Herbert Diess as new CEO

German auto giant Volkswagen, still battling to move past a long-running scandal over diesel emissions, today named the of the VW brand, Herbert Diess, as its new as part of a major management shake-up.

He will replace outgoing Matthias Mueller, who was appointed in 2015 shortly after the so-called "dieselgate" scandal broke and plunged the former paragon of German industry into the biggest crisis in its history.

He steered the mammoth carmaker into a massive restructuring, aiming to offer electric versions of many of its models and slim down its operations, but also landed in prosecutors' sights over suspicions he may have known about the cheating before it became public.
