Rs 4,962 cr tax relief for Gail

The Gujarat Sales Tax Tribunal has set aside a sales tax demand of Rs 4,962 crore on Gail (India) Ltd The order, passed on May 16, has upheld the stand taken by Gail that transportation of natural gas by it from Gujarat to other states amounts to stock transfer and not inter-state sales.
 
The judgment pronounced in favour of Gail will substantially reduce its tax liability.
 
The central issue was about the transmission of natural gas from Gujarat to other states, which the state sales tax department claimed was inter- state sale and assessed the tax provisionally and passed an order under Section 41B. ...  Read
