Akai was incorporated in 1977 by S N Baheti and V K Taparia. The company is engaged in the export of textiles, garment, dyes, chemicals, pharmaceutical and engineering goods. Over the years, it has moved into diesel engines, forgings, bicycles, tea and to polyester filament yarn, pharmaceuticals, readymade garments, cotten & synthetic textiles, chemicals, dyes, precious metals and so on.
Akai's export operations are divided into four divisions -- engineering, textiles, chemicals and global tendering for projects. Akai acts as a sole-selling agent in India for POY of Tainan Spinning Company (TSL) and Chung Shing Spinning (CSL), Taiwan. It has exported PFY yarn to countries like Vietnam, Srilanka, Bangladesh, Singapore, Afghanistan, the UK, Egypt, etc. Since 1984, it has been the largest importer of POY.
In 1982, Akai acquired Sunrise Soaps and Chemicals, which manufactures soaps and allied by-products. It has since been turned around. SSCL has a long-term supply arrangement with Hindustan Lever and manufactures popular brands like Rexona, Breeze, Sunlight, Lux and Lux International.
In Nov.'94, it entered the capital market to part-finance a project at Silvassa to manufacture 12,000 tpa of POY, 6000 tpa of texturised yarn, and
1750 tpa of knitted fabrics. The company has decided to set up a captive power generation plant to meet its energy requirements.
