Incorporated as a private limited company, Alcobex Metals became a deemed public limited company in 1988. The company took over the business assets and liabilities of Alcobex Metal Corporation to manufacture brass and copper extrusion products which find application in heavy electrical engineering, shipbuilding, power plants, telephone, transport, Defence, automobiles, etc.
Alcobex manufactures secondary zinc from zinc ash through the hydro-metallurgical process. It has added high-value items like copper tubes for refrigerators and air-conditioners, 70/30 cupro-nickel tubes used in the shipbuilding and the petroleum industry. Its principal customers include BHEL, HMT, Mazagaon Dock, Bajaj Tempo, TELCO, Godrej, Videocon, ABB, L&T amongst others.
The company tapped the capital market in Dec.'92, to part-finance the expansion of its capacities and product range to include new products like oxygen-free copper, thin-walled welded tubes, finned copper tubes and cable sockets.
During 1998-99, the Udaipur Unit of the Company, more or less, remained totally inoperational as the restrictions imposed by the Government on import of Zinc Ash, the principal raw material for production of secondary zinc, were not lifted by the Government. The company's Corporate Restructuring Scheme is under active consideration of the FI's & Banks and the company is expecting a favourable reply from them.
