The maker of Europa upholstery, Steelgrip insulation tapes, and Marblex floorings, Bhor Industries (BIL) is one of the well-known names in the plastic industry. Part of the Thackersey's group of companies, it was started in 1943 as a small unit, manufacturing army tentage.
By the early fifties, BIL had developed a large range of coated fabrics, including linseed oil, nitrocellulose, starch and plastic-coated material.A new calendering plant making PVC films and sheets was commissioned in the mid-fifties at Cadell Road, Mumbai. The company also launched the first laminated flooring, Vynatile, at Cadell Road. In 1964, Bhor set up a plant at Borivli to manufacture foam products and PVC insulation tapes. The vinyl flooring plant was set up in 1970 at Baroda, Gujarat. Its product -- Marblex -- has the ISI mark of quality.
In 1989, BIL promoted Bhor Wavelock Industries (BWI) with a 40% stake to manufacture reinforced PVC films and sheetings with technical know-how from Japan Wavelock Company, Japan; at Satara, Maharashtra. In 1994-95, it took over the BWI Satara plant for a consideration of Rs 1.51 cr.
The company has set up a Rs 9-cr project at Satara to produce PU and PVC leather cloth, and a Rs 2-cr project to manufacture greenhouse films.
