Promoted by Sharadchandra H Shah and his family, Sonell Clocks and Gifts was incorporated in Jan.'93. It manufactures quartz analogue clocks in the Sonell brand name. Production commenced in Feb.'93. In Apr.'93, it took over the business of Sonell Time Industries, a partnership firm engaged in the same line of activity. The company has its manufacturing facilities at Piparia, Silvassa. Over the years, the installed capacity has been increased to 50,000 pcs pa of wooden clocks and 1,50,000 pa of plastic clocks. In 1995-96, the company envisaged an expansion programme to increase the capacity of plastic clocks to 12,00,000 pcs pa and that of the wooden clocks to 3,60,000 pcs pa. The installed capacity of the unit will be 3.6 lac pcs pa of wooden clock frames, 50,000 pcs pa of photo frames and 3 lac running metres of finished wooden furniture mouldings. The company proposes to set up a showroom at Bombay for direct retail marketing of its products. To part-finance the above expansion project, the company came out with a public issue in Mar.'96. The company is negotiating for supply of mouldings & photoframes with M/s Ikea of Sweden who are one of the largest manufacturer of ready furnitures in the world.
