Sun Earth Ceramics, was incorporated in Jun.'78 as A C P Industries (formerly Aurangabad Asbestos Cement Products) was originally promoted by the Khinvasara family and acquired by the Motwani group.
The company is engaged in the manufacture of wall and floor ceramic tiles. It has an installed capapcity to manufacture nearly 5 million square meters per annum spread across three plants in Bharuch (Gujarat), Karjat and Alibaug (Maharashtra). The company products are sold across the country through an extensive network covering 500 dealers. The products are sold uder the 'Sonora' and 'Savana' brand names.
In Aug.'95, it came out with a convertible debenture rights issue to part-finance the setting up of a plant to produce international-quality ceramic wall tiles near Alibag in the Raidgad district of Maharashtra. The plant was started in Dec.'95 by using state-of-the-art double rapid firing tehchology. The company has enter into production of floor tiles in technical tie up with Welko, Italy.
During 1998-99, the asbestos pipe division of the company was hived off to group company Roofit Industries for a price of Rs 15.07 crs. It has also entered into tie-up with Masco Corporation, USA, for marketing of their bathroom accessory product range in India undr their brand.
The Company is in the process of installing a plant for third fired tiles at Karjat. After commissioning of this plant, the total capacity of third fired tiles is expected to reach 2800 square meters per day. The Company intends to become the largest domestic producer of these premium tiles by the end of 2000-01 with an installed capacity of 10500 SqM per day.
It aslo planning to acquire Hyderabad-based Regency Ceramics Ltd as part of its foray into the southern market.
Recently, in Feb. 2001, the company has setup a unit to manufacture premium vitrified tiles with an installed capacity of 2.5 million sq.m. per annum. With this, the company will have the highest installed capacity for vitrified tiles among all the ceramic tile manufacturers in the country, with a total installed capacity of 4.45 million sq.m.
