How will the Supreme Court verdict in the AMRI case impact patients?

The medical fraternity is of the opinion that the Rs 5.96 crore penalty imposed on Kolkata-based AMRI Hospital in a case of medical negligence would deter doctors from treating critically ill patients and those with complex diseases, besides jacking up health care costs. Lawyers, however, have hailed it as a landmark judgement, because of the quantum of penalty and for the fact that for the first time a hospital had been brought under scanner for medical negligence. The ruling, they say, is likely to compel doctors to be more responsible towards patient care and deliverng quality medical services. What is your take? Will the verdict benefit patients in the long run? Or will it be a burden on their pockets, besides impacting their ability to get proper medical attention in cases of critical illness?
