Is the food security bill a case of political opportunism by the Congress led UPA?
The Congress led UPA govt has taken the ordinance route to rollout its most ambitious food programme that aims to feed almost two-thirds of the country's poor. But can a country that is staring at widening fiscal deficit and wide spread leakages in existing food programmes afford such a high cost welfare programme. Why cant the govt fix the PDS system and ensure that existing schemes are run efficiently. Is this rank opportunism with eyes on electoral benefits or a genuine need of the hour.
