Chief Justice of India (CJI) K G Balakrishnan owns a Santro car and 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery as moveable property and three houses and two plots as immovable assets. He and 20 other judges of the Supreme Court today declared their assets.
While the CJI has no investment in shares and fixed deposits, the assets declared by him on the apex court’s official website show that he has immoveable property worth over Rs 18.08 lakh, which excludes a house on 15 cents (about 6,525 sq feet) of land in Thrikkakara South village in Kerala, whose valuation was not mentioned in the declaration.
The declaration of the CJI and others climaxed months of controversy triggered by Right to Information (RTI) petitions seeking transparency about the assets of judges of the higher judiciary that culminated in a battle in the Delhi High Court.

The Supreme Court adopted a strident stand in the high court, saying the judges were not covered by such a provision, but later relented under mounting public and media pressure.
Justice S H Kapadia, the senior -most judge and next in line to be the CJI, does not own a vehicle and has only a flat in Mumbai worth Rs 20 lakh, besides having moveable property worth Rs 41.15 lakh, which includes jewellery received at the time of his marriage which is currently valued at Rs 1 lakh.
Justice Tarun Chatterjee possesses ancestral property in Kolkata, with no other property either in his or in his spouse’s name. In his declaration, he mentioned that he has invested Rs 10,000 in mutual funds and around Rs 1.42 lakh in public provident fund, besides having a fixed deposit of Rs 10,000.
Justice Altmas Kabir, who is slated to become the CJI after Kapadia, has declared assets worth Rs 51.63 lakh, which includes a building in the Salt Lake area in Kolkata.
Justice R V Raveendran and his wife Vasanthi together have total immovable and movable properties worth around Rs 38.61 lakh, excluding shares and securities in 100 companies.
