`Acoustics market is on the threshold of explosive growth`
Our Regional Bureau / Chennai May 14, 2005
The rise in real estate activity for commercial purposes has been accompanied by business opportunities for low profile but important aspects to construction. Calibrating building acoustics to the relevant business activity is expected to be a fast growing market in India.

Sandeep Mittal, a director at Bangalore-based Anutone Acoustics, is upbeat on the sector’s future on account of the growing interest in office complexes, shopping malls and multiplexes. The architectural acoustics market is worth about Rs 200 crore a year, he says.

Around 58 per cent of the architectural acoustics demand comes from office complexes. Voice-based Business Process Outsourcing (BPOs) units make up an important part of that demand. Other areas where the acoustics demand is high are multiplexes and auditoriums.

Mittal predicts that the acoustics market is on the threshold of explosive growth. He feels that it would grow five-fold in four years to reach Rs 1,000 crore. The growth drivers would largely be office space and retail space.

The Rs 10-crore Anutone Acoustics, which draws about 70 per cent of its revenue from demand from offices and multiplexes, plans to expand its product range to tap the expected growth in the market.

The company currently manufactures pine wood acoustic panels in Bangalore. Mittal says that the company would expand its range to include steel panels that are popular in calibrating acoustics in airports.

Another segment of the business that Anutone plans to get in to is the ‘do-it-yourself’ market. Mittal says that Anutone would sell panels that can put up directly by the buyer. These panels can be sold over the Internet or audio shops, he adds.

The advent of foreign direct investment in real estate sector promises to draw attention to architectural dimensions that hardly attract any attention in India.

At present, architectural acoustics market has few overseas players such as Armstrong Ceiling. The combination of growing domestic demand and the entry of foreign players in real estate may soon raise the profile of architectural acoustics.
