`Civil aviation sector ripe for PPP`
Our Regional Bureau / Hyderabad December 09, 2005
Roddam Narasimha, a distinguished scientist and aerodynamicist, said it was time for attractive and innovative public-private partnerships (PPP) in the civil aircraft industry.

Stating that the boom in the civil aviation sector, triggered by the entry of budget carriers, had set the stage for an aggressive policy in the Indian aerospace and aeronautics, he said that over the last 20 years, the Indian aeroscience had achieved a commendable progress laying a solid foundation in research, design, development, testing and evaluation.

“The real technology is with PSUs and the need of the hour is to attract more funding and active participation from the private sector,” Narasimha said.

Narasimha was here to deliver the keynote address at the two-day symposium on applied aerodynamics and design of aerospace vehicles ‘Sarod-2005’that commenced here on Thursday.

With air traffic in the country increasing by about 20 per cent and budget carriers competing for class I rail passengers, he stressed on the need for making smaller aircraft, with less than 50-passenger capacity, for achieving greater success.

“The Civil aircraft business cannot be a viable venture unless one can develop successful models and find prospective buyers both in domestic as well as international market.”

The second prototype of Saras, the small-seater aircraft, developed by National Aerospace Laboratories, would be ready by March 2006 and would need another two years for certification from the director of civil aviation, he said.

In his inaugural address, Prahalada, director, Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), said that the objective of the symposium was to create a platform to share expertise from India and abroad on theoretical, computational and experimental aerodynamics.

The symposium is being jointly organised by DRDL, Aeronautical Development Agency, Centre for Aerospace System Design and Engineering, Indian Institute of Science and the computational fluid dynamics division of Aeronautical Society of India.
