50 cities identified by Nasscom for IT, ITeS sector
Press Trust of India / Coimbatore Jul 14, 2009, 13:20 IST

Nasscom (National Association of Software and Services Companies) has identified 50 cities for the IT and ITES sector, by classifying them as leaders, challengers, followers and aspirants.

Rajiv Vaishnav, vice-president of NASSCOM said seven of these cities are in the leader class and that they were expected to  grow two and half times by 2018. It was important to identify emerging destinations, he said, addressing a seminar on "emerging IT-BPO Destination-Coimbatore" here last night.

At the seminar, two leading city based universities urged Nasscom to partner them in setting up finishing schools and also to come out with syllabus on soft skills.

Prof G Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor,Bharathiar University appealed to Nasscom to set up such a school on their campus, which would benefit students and industries in the region.

For the benefit of outgoing students, at least six months training should be imparted to them so that they could develop skills as required by the indutries, he said.

R Radhakrishnan, vice-chancellor, Anna University, requested the association to prepare a syllabus on soft skills. It should also help in training students opting for internships and projects, he said.
