An overwhelming majority of Pakistanis favour punishing former President Pervez Musharraf for his unconstitutional act of imposing emergency in November 2007, according to a new survey.
The poll conducted by Gallup Pakistan, 52 per cent of Pakistanis supported harsh punishment for Musharraf and 19 percent supported mild punishment. Fifteen per cent said he should not be punished while the remaining 14 per cent did not give their view.
The survey’s findings also showed that while there were no significant differences in views on punishing Musharraf across gender and age, there were notable differences across political affiliations.
Above 80 per cent of those intending to vote for the PML-N, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal and Awami National Party favoured punishing Musharraf. Sixty per cent of Pakistan People’s Party and PML-Q voters backed the punishment while the support was the lowest amongst Muttahida Qaumi Movement voters at only 19 per cent.
Pakistan's Supreme Court declared last month that the emergency imposed by Musharraf in November 2007 was illegal and unconstitutional. This has raised the possibility of his trial on charges of treason.
The survey, conducted by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International, covered nearly 3,000 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of Pakistan. It was carried out in the first half of August.
