Accreditation for quality education
Komal Amit Gera / New Delhi/ Chandigarh Nov 14, 2009, 00:44 IST

The National Accreditation Board for Education and Training (NABET) is in advanced stages of discussions with the state governments of Maharashtra, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Tripura to implement the Accreditation Standard for Quality School Governance. Director of NABET(an autonomous body under Quality Council of India), Vipin Sahni, said in Chandigarh that 9 schools had got the accreditation and 50 were in the pipeline across India. He said the accreditation was valid for four years, subject to revision, and there would be consistent monitoring of services provided by the schools over the period. He added that depending upon the strength of the school, an accreditation fee of maximum of Rs 50,000 would be charged from a school.

He said the body would be working on a module to sign MoUs with the state governments to implement the standards in the state-run schools.

Sahni apprised NABET had trained 2,000 persons and empanelled 450 teachers as consultants to study the educational institutes for accreditation.

According to Sahni, they were in touch with the education secretaries and education ministers of various states to create awareness about the new standards.

“We propose to do a handholding for a sample of schools in every state to explain how the introduction of standards would help in the holistic development of students and then would replicate it in schools on the recommendation of state governments,” he added.

NABET has proposed to the Union Territory of Chandigarh Administration and Government of Punjab to implement the standards in 10 schools each and is expecting a positive response.
