| The advance corporate tax collection up to June 23 has increased by 166 per cent to Rs 9,079 crore from Rs 3,413 crore collected during the corresponding period of 2004-05.

| Finance ministry officials said the growth was on account of a lower base in the previous year. Corporate tax was expected to maintain healthy growth this fiscal, said an official.

| The corporate tax collection did not include fringe benefit tax, which would figure in collections from September, he added.

| Income tax collection during the same period, however, declined by 29 per cent to Rs 7,091 crore from Rs 9,987 crore because of an increase in the income tax exemption limit to Rs 1 lakh and rise in refunds.

| Income tax collection went down by 20.85 per cent to Rs 2,576 crore in April 2005 from Rs 3,254 crore in April 2004, while the collection during April-May declined by around 8 per cent to Rs 2,234 crore from Rs 2,422 crore during April-May 2004-05.

| Officials said the income tax collection was expected to pick up in the second half of the year.

| The overall indirect tax collection during April-May increased by 37 per cent. Excise duty collection increased by 2.5 per cent at Rs 6,427 crore from Rs 6,270 crore during April-May 2004-05.

| Customs duties rose by 38.03 per cent at Rs 9,886 crore in the first two months of 2005-06 compared with Rs 7,162 crore in the corresponding period of 2004-05. The service tax collection during the first two months increased by around 13 per cent over the previous year. |
