Much to the chagrin of his detractors, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani once again appeared to be in leadership role, as he charted out the road map for future course of action for his party.
Advani, speaking at the conclusion of the two-day meeting of the BJP’s national executive committee, called for immediate changes in the party’s organisational set-up — both in states and the Centre — and the mechanism to focus on grooming younger leaders as lessons drawn from its poll defeat.
Advani’s remarks that he would soon visit all the states to interact with BJP workers left nobody in doubt that he would continue to play a major role in the party, notwithstanding criticism from many speakers that “leaders close to him were responsible for party’s defeat”.
Sunderlal Patwa, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister, and many other who spoke today said that more than the party not winning the election “reports being planted by senior leaders against each other were setting in demoralisation in the party cadres”. According to senior party leader Venkaiah Niadu, who briefed the media on today’s proceedings, Advani is reported to have asked leaders to debate inner party issues without publicising them in the media.
