After cyclone Aila, thunderstorm alert in W Bengal

The metropolis and several districts in West Bengal recovering from the devastation caused by cyclone Aila, are likely to be hit by a thunderstorm soon.

"A thunderstorm with windspeeds reaching 50 to 60 km per hour is likely to hit the districts this evening," Regional Meterological Centre Director G C Debnath told PTI here.

Gusty winds and rain are likely over the state capital, which is limping back to normal life after the cyclone that uprooted hundreds of trees and snapped power lines.

The districts which are likely to be affected are Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum, Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura and Purulia, he said.

The severe cyclone Aila, which had yesterday dissipated into a depression after creating havoc in Darjeeling hills, has now totally disappeared, Debnath added.

The monsoon has, however, reached West Bengal nearly a fortnight earlier due to Aila and has covered most parts of the state.

Scattered rains would occur in all these places due to the onset of monsoon, he said.
