AI pilots lose jobs as Boeing freighters phased out
Press Trust of India / Mumbai Feb 17, 2010, 18:32 IST

As national carrier Air India plans to phase out Boeing 747-400 and A-310 freighters, several pilots flying these aircraft, are also on their way out.

Sources today said, Air India has already terminated the service contracts of 30 senior most commanders flying these planes and many more are on the chopping block.

"The service contract of 30 pilots have been terminated effective from February 18," they said.

Sources said, the airline has served a month's notice to these pilots in January, saying that their services were no longer required by the national air carrier.

Air India currently has six Boeing 747-400 and two A-310 cargo carriers in its fleet.

Recently it leased out two another A-310 freighters to Delhi-based cargo airline, Aryan Cargo.

instead of paying huge amount of PLI to pilots and engineers the better alternative is to give ONE MONTH NOTICE to as many engineers, pilots and technicians as possible[mainly disturbance oriented] saying that their services are no longer required--THIS IS LEGAL--AS PER APPOINTMENT LETTER--REDUCTION OF SALARY ONLY GENERATES SYMPATHY---GIVING ONE MONTH NOTICE IS BETTER ALTERNATIVE

The Pilots that have been asked to leave are mostly retired or they would have been retrained for other fleet types. Air India cannot continue running hundreds of crores in losses as a public service to its employees

Why is it that ANY happening inside Air India is considered newsworthy? Businesses do get out certain activities and the people employed in such tasks either get redeployed or terminated. Air India suffering from huge staff surplus expectedly terminated the srvices of the pilots engaged in running these freighters. What is the big deal? These pilots are multi millionaires thanks to the generous salaries and tax free allowances they earned over at least 20 years. And they can still expect to get employed by other airlines. Let the media not commiserate with the "plight" of these highly overpaid, highly pampered and highly indisciplined staff who have held the airline and the country to ransom for years. Air India must be wholly privatized for the staff to feel the heat of the real world where none of their strong arm tactics will work. Rest assured, when the stick is wielded these very staff will shape up!
