Air India to issue advertisement for COO post
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Aug 04, 2009, 20:59 IST

Ailing Air India will soon issue a global advertisement to appoint a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to carry out day-to-day operations under Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Arvind Jadhav, Civil Aviation Ministry sources said today.

The COO, who will be a professional airline manager with a proven track record, will be appointed on a contract of three to five years, the sources said.

The government had last month announced that the top management of the national carrier would undergo an overhaul within 30 days.

"We are working on a turnaround plan for Air India and not on its privatisation," a source said in reply to questions.

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel had earlier said, "You are going to see a major change in the Air India board. We are going to bring high-quality people of great integrity and people with a proven track record in business."

To questions regarding the recent strike call by private carriers, which was later withdrawn, the sources said the Ministry had done its bit on their demands relating to high taxes on jet fuel and high airport charges.

On the high incidence of sales tax on fuel, the sources said the matter was taken up at the level of the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister, besides the Empowered Group of State Finance Ministers headed by West Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta.
