Amid telecom tariff war, PMO looks for best option
Mansi Taneja / New Delhi Jan 05, 2010, 00:15 IST

Cheaper mobile tariffs across the country has even attracted the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to explore the various plans offered by the service providers and to have the best option, specific to its requirement.

PMO has sought details from various service providers, including Reliance Communications, which offers mobile service on both GSM and CDMA platforms, on the new plans with special emphasis on international and national long distance calls as well as roaming charges.

“Keeping in mind the recent drastic change in telecom tariffs, it has been decided to explore the option of the best available plan, specific to the requirements of PMO,” it said in a letter to service providers. The department has also asked mobile players to furnish information for an internal building solution system for uninterrupted signals.

PMO currently uses mobile services from Bharti Airtel.

“Before a decision is taken for a change of service provider, it is requested to provide option of various plans for PMO, enabling us to take a fresh view regarding mobile connections,” the letter from PMO said.

Asked to comment on the development, a spokesperson for Bharti Airtel said: “The (PMO) account continues to be with Bharti Airtel.”

Further, PMO has asked for the required details latest by January 15.

However, the names of all the service providers could not be ascertained.

Of late, the telecom industry has been witnessing a tariff war due to the entry of new players in the segment.

Prices in the mobile space have come down to a new low of one paisa per second. Tata Docomo, Sistema Shyam, Loop Mobile, Uninor, STel are among the new players that have entered the mobile space.

The new players are offering cheap tariff plans to lure more and more customers in the already crowded Indian mobile phone market, with 11-12 operators in a circle.
